Plitvice Lakes, Croatia, is an UNESCO world heritage site and a National Park. Over thousands of years, these waters deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have made the beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls here today. These geological processes continue today, and the park is home to bears, wolves and rare bird species. Covering almost 30,000 hectares, the National Park is located in the lower elevations of the Dinarides (the Dinaric Alps) in the central part of the country. The Plitvice Lakes fascinate scientists and visitors and are in a mix of forests and meadows.
