The Dead Sea is a salt lake with Jordan to the east and Israel to the west. It is 430.5 meters (1,412 feet) below sea level making it the lowest land-based elevation on Earth. It is also the deepest hypersaline lake in the world at 304 meters (997 feet) deep. It is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water and 9.6 times as salty as the ocean.

The Dead Sea is one of the world's first health resorts and has supplied many products such as asphalt and potash. Unfortunately, it has been receding at a fast pace. There have been many canal and pipeline proposals to slow down the recession.

There are two formation theories about the low elevation of the Dead Sea. The older theory is that the Dead Sea lies in a true rift zone, an extension of the Red Sea Rift, or even of the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. The newer hypothesis is that the Dead Sea basin is a consequence of a "step-over" discontinuity along the Dead Sea Transform.

The mineral content of the Dead Sea's water, the low content of allergens in the atmosphere, the reduced ultraviolet component of solar radiation, and the higher atmospheric pressure may have specific health effects. For example, those with lower respiratory function seem to benefit from the increased atmospheric pressure.

This has allowed the region to be a popular center of putative therapies. Three examples are: climatotherapy - treatment which exploits climate features such as temperature, humidity, sunshine, barometric pressure, and special atmospheric constituents; heliotherapy - treatment that exploits the biological effects of the sun's radiation; and thalassotherapy - treatment that exploits bathing in Dead Sea water.

The Dead Sea is in a desert where rainfall is not regular. Winter temperatures are mild averaging 63 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius) at the southern end and 58 degrees Fahrenheit (14 degrees Celsius) at the northern end. It does not get below freezing. Summer is very hot at 93 degrees Fahrenheit (34 degrees Celsius) and 124 degrees Fahrenheit (51 degrees Celsius).

I hope you enjoyed the tour!
