On the Niagara River in New York State you will find a city called Niagara Falls. There are three waterfalls and some of what is known as the Niagara Falls are on the Canadian border. In Niagara Falls State Park from the Observation Tower at Prospect Point, you can see over the Niagara Gorge and see all three waterfalls. On trails you can see other viewpoints of Niagara Falls from the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center.

Niagara Falls State Park is America's oldest state park and is known as "a park for all seasons." The State Park contains more than 400 acres of landscape. The three waterfalls are known as Horseshoe Falls which is the largest of the waterfalls and also known as Canadian Falls because of being along the international border. The other two falls are known as American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls and are within the United States.

Bridal Veil Falls is separated from Horseshoe Falls by Goat Island and from the American Falls by Luna Island which are located in New York state. All of the falls combined have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in North America that has a vertical drop of more than 50 m (160 ft). Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by flow rate.

Niagara Falls was formed in the last ice age, when glaciers receded and water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path over and through the Niagara Escarpment en route to the Atlantic Ocean. This only occurred 12,000 years ago which is young geologically speaking. More than 700,000 gallons of water per second come out of Niagara Falls and go at a rate of about 25 miles an hour. That makes Niagara Falls the largest in North America by volume and by width.

The five Great Lakes all drain into the Niagara River before emptying into Lake Ontario which creates the world's largest freshwater system. In 1885, Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse made the world's first hydroelectric power plant in Niagara Falls. Now the Falls can generate four million kilowatts of electricity. Eight million visitors come to Niagara Falls State Park a year. Interestingly enough, the Falls were originally located seven miles downriver near what is now Lewiston. The Falls have eroded to its current location and the current erosion rate is 1 foot annually.

Operating since 1846, the Maid of the Mist is a tour boat fleet that have been going through the waters of the Niagara Gorge for over 100 years. The Maid of the Mist is only used on the U.S. side of the Falls. You access the Maid of the Mist via the Observation Tower and journey along the Niagara River. This ride will last a half an hour. Another thing you should ride is the Niagara Scenic Trolley which will take you to several locations in the park and is a three mile ride. A history of the park is provided by a tour guide and is seasonal.

I hope you enjoyed the tour!
