Near Kunming, China, Dongchuan Red Land, is a new rising tourist attraction. These red lands extend for 50 kilometers (30 miles), and are praised as "God's palette". Photographers and backpackers love Dongchuan Red Land and the fields are the best in the world.





The altitude there is 1,800 to 2,600 meters (5,900 to 8,500 feet). One of the best times to go is May to June. The fields are red with potato flowers opening in the summer and golden wheat. Another good time is September to November where Yunnan's unique white cole flowers make the fields more colorful.





Dongchuan has also been called the "natural copper capital" since ancient time. Due to the humid and warm climate, the iron elements in the soil after oxidation causes the glaring red color to form after centuries.





According to the story, the discovery of Dongchuan Red Land, belongs to a photographer. The photographer saw the red land when he was passing by plane and he went there lots of time to search the area. As soon as his photos were seen by people, tourists came and developed enthusiasm and passion for the land.





According to the locals, the red land looks brightly colored and gorgeous after a rain. It is a little dim and dull in the morning but much better in the evening. Dongchuan Red Land was selected as the Top Undiscovered China Attractions.
